Lupita Nyong'o, Rubén Santiago Hudson, James Ortiz Among the 2016 Obie Award Winners

The 61st annual Obie Awards (formerly known as the Off-Broadway Theater Awards) were presented on Monday, May 23, 2016 in a ceremony hosted by Lea DeLaria at Webster Hall in Manhattan's NoHo/Union Square area. The Obie Awards were jointly presented by the Village Voice and (administered since 2014) by the American Theatre Wing. As the Tony Awards cover Broadway productions, the Obie Awards cover Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions.

Among the winners this year were Lupita Nyong'o and the complete cast (Akousia Busia, Zainab Jah, Pascale Armand, Saycon Sengbloh) of the Danai Gurira play Eclipsed (now playing on Broadway), who were among the Performance awardees. Rajiv Joseph's Guards at the Taj won the Best New American Play honor. James Ortiz received a Design Obie for his puppet design of The Woodsman (he also did the scenic design of the production, co-directed and stars in the musical, which is currently playing at New World Stages). Under Special Citations: Collaborations, Dominique Morriseau and Rubén Santiago Hudson shared an award as playwright and director of Skeleton Crew. Carmen de Lavallade and A.R. Gurney picked up Lifetime Achievement honors. For more information (including a full list of winners), click here.
