Horatio Sanz and Fred Armisen Are Creating Más Mejor – A Digital Hub for Latino Comedy

Fred Armisen and Horatio Sanz.
The Hispanic population is the fastest-growing segment in the United States, accounting for 17 percent of the U.S. population, according to 2014 census estimates. Despite the fact that there are 55 million Latinos, however, the amount of original content targeting the demographic is lagging. And comedy is one of the largest gaps, especially within the digital space. "There is no real hub for high-quality Latino comedy," noted "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Horatio Sanz. Along with former castmate and "Portlandia" star Fred Armisen, Sanz has signed on to groom emerging Latino comics for a new venture from Broadway Video, SNL creator Lorne Michaels' production outfit.

Broadway Video plans to launch Más Mejor ("More Better") on Monday, January 11, 2016, with talent that so far includes sketch comedy troupe Room 28 and stand-up comic Gina Brillón, who in June performed on NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers".

Más Mejor will target young millennial Latinos, who increasingly are moving away from watching traditional TV. "They're much more digitally savvy than your average non-Latino," noted Britta von Schoeler, who will head up Más Mejor while remaining president of Broadway Video Enterprises, the production company's distribution and licensing arm.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the hit Broadway musicals In The Heights and Hamilton, has been awarded a prestigious Genius Grant by the MacArthur Foundation.

A composer, lyricist and performer, Miranda was recognized for "reimagining American musical theater in works that fuse traditional storytelling with contemporary musical styles and voices."

MacArthur Foundation typically to between 20 and 40 individuals, working in any field, who "show exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work and are citizens or residents of the United States.

According to the Foundation's website, "the fellowship is not a reward for past accomplishment, but rather an investment in a person's originality, insight, and potential." The current prize is $625,000 paid over five years in quarterly installments. This figure was increased from $500,000 in 2013 with the release of a review of the MacArthur Fellows Program. The award has been called "one of the most significant awards that is truly 'no strings attached.'"

Miranda joins an illustrious list of MacArthur Fellows including cultural anthropologist Alfonso Ortiz; historian Ramón A. Gutiérrez; community organizer Ernesto J. Cortés, Jr.; community developer Hipólito (Paul) Roldán; farm labor leader Baldemar Velásquez; community development leader María Varela, human rights lawyer José Zalaquett; writer and artist Guillermo Gómez Peña; artist and cultural critic Amalia Mesa-Bains; physician Pedro Greer; radio producer Hugo Morales; writer and poet Sandra Cisneros; journalist Alma Guillermoprieto; voting rights advocate Joaquín Ávila; writer and performance artist Luis Alfaro; physicist Juan Maldacena; artist Pepón Osorio; photographer Alfredo Jaar; civil rights policy advocate Cecilia Muñoz; poet Lucía M. Latinos in the U.S. Really Need a Viola Davis

[Emmy Award winner Viola] Davis has deservedly been championed across the press and social media for her speech, which went on to cite the trailblazing work of other black actresses and industry figures who she says redefined what it means “to be a leading woman, to be black.”

As challenging as it is for black [African American] women to find roles, there’s another group of women her words apply to who are even less visible on television. While black women accounted for 13% of female characters on prime-time television this year, Latinas made up just 4%, according to a report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film
Yet Latinos are actually the largest minority group in the U.S., accounting for about 17% of the population, compared to 13% for black Americans.

These statistics don’t diminish Davis’s point. Black women most certainly are still underrepresented, as are other minorities. Women overall get only 40% of speaking roles on all broadcast, cable, and Netflix programs, according to the report. So although the proportion of black female characters looks like it matches the percentage of the U.S. population that’s black, black women (and all women) are starting at a disadvantage because overall they have a smaller piece of the pie. –Marc Bain, Quartz
