The Outer Critics Circle (OCC) kicked off the 2015-16 theater awards season on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 when Brian d'Arcy James and Jennfier Simard announced the list of OCC Awards nominations at the Algonquin Hotel in the theater district of midtown Manhattan.
On Your Feet!: The Story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan (written by Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan, and Alexander Dinelaris) received seven nominations (including one for Outstanding New Broadway Musical). Other nominations for the show include nods for HOLA Awards honoree Dinelaris, for Outstanding Book of a Musical (Broadway or Off-Broadway); Ana Villafañe, for Outstanding Actress in a Musical; Andréa Burns, for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical; Sergio Trujillo, for Outstanding Choreographer; ESosa, for Outstanding Costume Design (Play or Musical). Others nominated for Outer Critics Circle Awards this year include Matthew López, for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play for The Legend of Georgia McBride, Marco Ramírez, for the John Gassner Playwriting Award for The Royale; former HOLA Awards honoree Danny Burstein, for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for Fiddler on the Roof; former HOLA Awards honoree Daphne Rubin-Vega, for Outstanding Solo Performance for Empanada Loca; and Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o for Outstanding Actress in a Play for Eclipsed. Note that only new elements of the productions Hamilton, Disaster!, and Blackbird, which were eligible in their off-Broadway incarnations, were considered for 2016 nominations.
The winners will be announced on Monday, May 9, 2016 and the annual Gala Awards Dinner will be held at 4pm on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Sardi's Restaurant in the theater district of midtown Manhattan. The Outer Critics Circle is the organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway representing more than 90 newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, websites and theatre publications in America and abroad. They were begun during the 1949–1950 theatre season. The Outer Critics Circle nominations are the first major Broadway/Off-Broadway award nominations of the New York theatre season.
