In keeping with the Drama Desk's mission, nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway during the 2011-12 New York theater season in the same competitive categories.

Raúl Esparza, pictured at right, received a nomination for
Outstanding Actor in a Musical for the Broadway musical Leap of Faith, which is currently playing on the Main Stem. He is up against superstar Ricky Martin for his role as Che in Evita.

Other Latinos nominated this year include choreographer Sergio Trujillo, honored for his work on Leap of Faith; musician Suzanne Vega, nominated with Duncan Sheik for their music of the play Carson McCullers Talks About Love; costume designer ESosa for his work on By The Way, Meet Vera Stark; and director Sam Mendes (of Trinidadian-English-Portuguese heritage), nominated for his work helming Richard III.

The Drama Desk nominees will receive their Nomination Certificates at a gala cocktail reception May 8, 2012 at Oceana in New York.

The 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards will take place June 3, 2012 at 8pm at The Town Hall in Manhattan.

The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 "to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York," according to press notes. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions in the same categories.
