González Iñárritu and Lubezki Win Oscars (Again); Latinos Also Represented in Animation

The team of director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki struck Oscar gold again, where for the second consecutive year they received Academy Awards for the direction and direction of photography, respectively, of the film The Revenant. (Last year, they received Oscars for the film Birdman). González Iñárritu picked up his second consecutive Academy Award for directing, becoming the third person (and first Latino) to do so. (The other directors to repeat Oscar wins were John Ford in 1940 and 1941, and Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1949 and 1950.) It is also the third consecutive year a Mexican has won this award (he succeeded former HOLA Awards honoree Alfonso Cuarón, who won for his work on Gravity). Lubezki also won an Academy Award for his work on Gravity, making him the first person to ever win three consecutive Oscars for cinematography.

Latinos were also represented in the animation categories. Chile's Historia de un oso (Bear Story) won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film (the award went to director Gabriel Osorio Vargas and producer Pato Escala Pierart), while director Pete Docter and producer Jonás Rivera picked up the Best Animated Feature Film for the Pixar film Inside Out.

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) honored film in 2015 and took place on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California where awards in 24 categories were presented.
