Pablo Larraín, Paulina García, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Sebastián Sepúlveda, and Mauricio Zacharias Among The Nominees of This Year's Film Independent Spirit Awards

The Film Independent Spirit Awards (originally known as the FINDIE or Friends of Independents Awards), founded in 1984, are awards dedicated to independent filmmakers. The nominees were announced on Tuesday, November 22, 2016.

Chilean director Pablo Larraín's debut film in English, Jackie, picked up four nominations– for Best Female Lead (Natalie Portman), Best Editing (Sebastián Sepúlveda), Best Director, and Best Feature (produced by the team of Darren Aronofsky, Scott Franklin, Ari Handel, Juan de Dios Larraín, and Mickey Liddell).

Chilean actress Paulina García picked up a Best Supporting Female nomination for her role in the film Little Men. The same film earned Mauricio Zacharias and Ira Sachs a nomination for Best Screenplay. Brazilian director-screenwriter Kleber Mendonça Filho picked up a Best International Film nomination for his film Aquarius (starring Sônia Braga).

Also joining Juan de Dios Larraín picking up a nomination as a producer in the category of Best Feature are Lucas Ochoa (as part of the producing team of American Honey); and Michel Franco, Gabriel Ripstein, and Moisés Zonana (who, with Gina Kwon, produced Chronic). Nominees for Best First Feature include Rodrigo Teixeira (as part of the producing team of The Witch).

Casting director Yesi Ramírez was named one of the winners of the Robert Altman Award, which is given to the director, casting director and ensemble cast of a feature film (in this case, the film Moonlight, which included Mahershala Ali, Noamie Harris, Janelle Monáe and Jharrel Jerome).


Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the 32nd Film Independent Spirit Awards, will hand out its awards on Saturday, February 25, 2017 in Santa Monica, California. For more information, click here and here.
