2014 HOLA Awards honoree Lupita Ferrer was profiled in an article in the national newspaper El Especialito, where she spoke of her career, including her role in the feature film Medardo (directed by Nitsy Grau Crespo and written by and starring Julio Ortega, shown at right), which also starred Edna Lee Figueroa, Edison Carrera, Inma Heredia and Juan Villarreal. The feature film The Hardest Love (written and directed by Henry B. Roa) continues its award-winning journey on the film festival circuit. Its next stop will be in May at the Three Cities Online Film/TV Festival and Conference. The three cities in question are Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic; Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.; and New York, New York, U.S.A. The films will be screened online via computer, mobile, Roku, or Apple TV. The feature film stars Francisco Ramos, Paola Tonini and Jason Torres. For more information, click here, here or here.

Pablo Andrade, shown above left and above right, was featured in a cover story in Venezuelan magazine Estampas, which highlighted his career in New York, which has yielded him several roles on stage and screen and a lion's share of awards (including two HOLA Awards). Ángel Dillemuth, shown at left, was a guest star on an episode of "The Following" (Fox).

J.W. Cortés is starring in the film Stop (written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green), which will soon hit the film festival circuit.

Johanna Tolentino recently premiered the pilot webisode of her webseries "Whatever It Takes". The webseries is created, co-produced, co-written, and co-directed by Tolentino, and also stars Jay Álvarez (who can be seen in the pilot webisode), Solanyi Rodríguez, A.B. Andrea Navedo, shown at right, was profiled by Deyanira Martínez in the March 2015 issue of Latin Trends magazine, where she spoke about her career and her role as Xiomara in the critically acclaimed, award winning The CW series "Jane The Virgin". To read the article, click on the image at right.

Monte Bezell stars in and co-directed the feature film El Gallo (written by Joel Luna and co-directed by Ali Abouomar). The film, which stars Chris LaPlanta, José Ramón Rosario and Francesca Van Horne, also stars Manny Alfaro (see below), Denia Brache, A.B. Lugo (see below), Abraham Makany, Paul Mauriello, AR García, Lara Goldie, José A. Esquea, and Luna. The film recently wrapped production in New York City.

Esmeralda magazine recently covered the 2014 HOLA Awards in a two-page spread in its December 2014-January 2015 issue. Group of the Arts (GOTA) is presenting Pablo Cabrera's ¡Por mi madre, que es verdad! An adaptation of Enrique Buenaventura and Tomás Carrasquilla's A la diestra de Dios Padre and the medieval legend of The Blacksmith and the Devil, it is directed by J. Edgar Mozoub and stars Digna Carvajal, Telba Cavero, María Cotto, Dílcia De Jesús, Altagracia Frías, Agar García, Enmanuel García Villavicencio (see above), Milo Galicia, A.B. Lugo (see above), Amado Marte, Mozoub, Erickson Peralta, Yvette Quintero, Héctor Luis Rivera (see above), Raúl Rivera, Schneider Ureña and Pedro Vargas. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Liza Colón-Zayas, Víctor Almanzar Among the Lortel Nominees as HAMILTON and BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY Rack Up Multiple Nominations

Nominations for the 30th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards, recognizing the best in Off-Broadway theatre, have been announced. The critically-acclaimed, Broadway-bound Lin-Manuel Miranda musical Hamilton led the pack with twelve nominations. The twelve nominations for The Public Theater’s Hamilton broke the record of eleven set just last year. Prior to that, the most nominations earned by one show had been eight (the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Into The Woods received seven nominations). The Stephen Adly Guirgis play Between Riverside and Crazy (produced by Atlantic Theatre Company) led all plays with six nominations.

Latinos nominated for the Lortel Award this year include actor-writer-composer Miranda, who earned a pair of nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical and Outstanding Musical for his work on Hamilton (which is headed to Broadway later this year); Víctor Almanzar and HOLA member Liza Colón-Zayas for Outstanding Featured Actor and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, respectively for their work on Between Riverside and Crazy.

The awards, founded in 1985, are named for Lucille Lortel, an actress and theater producer, and are produced by the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers  by special arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Foundation, with additional support from the Theatre Development Fund. Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Anna Chlumsky will host the Lortel Awards, which will take place Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the Skirball Center in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. "World's Oldest Filmmaker", Manoel de Oliveira Dies at 106 / "O cineasta mais velho do mundo", Manoel de Oliveira morre aos 106

Manolo Cândido Pinto de Oliveira, better known as Manoel de Oliveira, has passed away at the age of 106. Born in 1908 in Cedofeito, Oporto, Portugal, he directed his first film in 1931 and continued making films until 1942, whereupon he stopped making films until 1955, after which he worked nonstop, up until his last film, O Velho do Restelo (The Old Man of Belem), which was released in 2014 (when de Oliveria was just shy of 105 years old).

In all, he directed 62 documentaries, features and short films (of which he wrote or co-wrote 52 of them), most of which after 1990 (when he was 82 years old). In addition, he edited 34 of his films, and acted as cinematographer in 10 of them.

De Olivera is the only filmmaker whose active career spans from the silent age to the digital age. The New York Times declared him "almost as old as cinema itself". Since 2001, he has been considered the oldest movie director in activity. Among his numerous awards were two career Golden Lions from the Venice Film Festival, a Golden Palm from the Cannes Film Festival, and the French Legion of Honor. He passed away in Oporto on Thursday, April 2, 2015 due to congestive heart failure. He leaves behind his wife Maria Isabel Brandão de Meneses de Almeida Carvalhais, four children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Nascido em 1908 em Cedofeito, Porto, Portugal, dirigiu seu primeiro filme em 1931 e continuou a fazer filmes até 1942, quando então ele parou de fazer filmes até 1955, após o qual ele trabalhou sem parar, até seu último filme, O Velho do Restelo (The Old Man de Belém), que foi lançado em 2014 (quando de Oliveria foi apenas tímido de 105 anos de idade). 

Ao todo, ele dirigiu 62 documentários, características e curtas-metragens (dos quais ele escreveu ou co-escreveu 52 deles), a maioria dos quais depois de 1990 (quando ele tinha 82 anos de idade). Além disso, ele editou 34 de seus filmes, e atuou como diretor de fotografia em 10 deles. 

De Olivera é o único cineasta cuja carreira ativa se estende a partir da idade du cinema mudo para a era digital. The New York Times declarou-o "quase tão antiga quanto o próprio cinema". Desde 2001, ele tem sido considerado o mais antigo diretor de cinema em atividade. Entre seus numerosos prêmios foram dois carreira Leão du Ouro do Festival de Veneza, a Palma de Ouro do Festival de Cannes, e da Legião de Honra francesa. Ele faleceu no Porto, em quinta-feira, abril 2, 2015 por insuficiência cardíaca congestiva. Ele deixa para trás sua esposa Maria Isabel Brandão de Meneses de Almeida Carvalhais, quatro filhos, cinco netos e sete bisnetos.

The December 2014-January 2015 issue of Esmeralda magazine (with 2014 HOLA Awards recipient and Broadway performer and triple threat Bianca Marroquín on the cover, shown at right) is chock full of HOLA members in its pages. They are listed below along with images of their corresponding articles (which are all in Spanish).

• Manuel A. Morán was profiled and highlighted for his work as an actor, singer, writer, composer, puppeteer, director and producer (of the bilingual children and family theater company Society of the Educational Arts, also known as SEA, which he created while still a teenager in his native Puerto Rico). HOLA also gets a mention in the article as well.

• Teresa Yenque, also mentioned on the cover, was interviewed in which she spoke on her long illustrious career which covers everything from Broadway to telenovelas to feature films and television series. She also spoke on moving from her native Perú to New York City and raising her two sons (one of whom is José Yenque, also an actor). Finally, she also gave advice to those who want to get into acting. Yenque recently received the Extraordinary Latin ACE Award for Distinction and Merit, the highest award given from the Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos de Nueva York.

• Ana María Estrada was profiled where she spoke on being able to have two films in two different languages in which she acted have their premieres in two different cities in two different countries in two different continents in the span of two weeks. The films were Category 5 (written by E.M. McCoy and directed by Rob King), which starred Burt Reynolds and C. Thomas Howell, and had its premiere in Biloxi, Mississippi, U.S.A.; and La amante del libertador (written and directed by Roció Lladó), which starred Wendy Vásquez and Luis Galli, and had its premiere in Lima, Lima, Perú. She also spoke of her role as a producer (with Dakini Productions) and her recent Tumi USA Award.

Mario Golden and Yvette Quintero (see below), shown above, from left to right, were highlighted in El Blog de Pablo (from Pablo García Gámez, see also below), for their work in the upcoming production of El canto de Carlota (Charlotte's Song). Written by Nancy Ferragallo, the dance-theater piece is directed by Andreas Robertz and Golden, choreographed by Ferragallo and Celeste Hastings. This will be the piece's Spanish-language world premiere, and it will have a one-evening benefit performance for the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Flamboyán Theater in the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center (home to HOLA) in Manhattan's Loísaida neighborhood. Mauricio Pita will be acting in April and May in a NYC school tour of the show Los Desertores (The Dropouts), written by Radamés Gavé, Manuel A. Morán (see below) and Richard Marino, and directed by Morán.

Velson D'Souza, shown at right, acted in the world premiere of I Catch You Dreaming. Written by Rafael Albarrán and directed by Gama Valle, the Oomph Theater production also starred Albarrán, John Paul Harkins, Annabel Lalonde, Serena Miller, Arron Pfeiffer and Amanda Ríos Nieves and took place in March at the Flamboyán Theater at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center (home to HOLA) in Manhattan's Loísaida neighborhood.

Teresa Yenque (see below) guest-starred in an episode of "Broad City" (Comedy Central).

La Asociación de Teatro Independiente (ATI), presented its annual awards for theater on Friday, March 27, 2015 in New York City. HOLA members among the winners include Ivonne Martínez, Yvette Quintero (see above), Marco Antonio Rodríguez, Adriana Sananes and Fermín Suárez.

La Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos de Nueva York (ACE) presented its annual awards for theater, film, television and radio on Monday, March 30, 2015 in New York City. HOLA members among the winners include Pablo Andrade, Iván L. Argudo, Xiomara Cintrón, Caridad del Valle, Pablo García Gámez (see above), Enmanuel García Villavicencio, Mateo Gómez, Gerardo Gudiño, Sandor Juan, A.B. Lugo, Manuel A. Morán (see above), Héctor Luis Rivera, Raúl Rivera, Jeannie Sol, Sebastian Stimman, Kathy Tejada, and Teresa Yenque (also see above; the last of whom received an Extraordinary Award for Distinction and Merit, and for whom this year's ceremony was dedicated).

David Zayas, shown at right, was featured in the NPR special series "My Big Break", where he talks of his life and career. Zayas can currently be seen playing Salvatore "The Boss" Maroni on the Fox television series "Gotham", and can soon be seen starring opposite Helen Hunt in the film Ride (scheduled for release in U.S. theaters on Friday, May 1, 2015). Juan Chaves, Paul Mauriello and Tom Schubert co-star in the improvisational comedy webseries "Mix-Matched". Conceived by Lina Sarrello, the webseries also stars Sarrello, Lailah Lancing, Marie Pohl, and Andrés Chulisi Rodríguez, and deals with the world of online dating. The webseries is currently shooting in New York City.
