Bochinche refers to “gossip”. In this sense, we use it to mention HOLA members or Friends of HOLA who are getting acting, performance or similarly artistic gigs and/or recognition in the media. Luis Salgado and Maite Uzal, shown above, left to right, in a post-performance discussion and in character, respectively, were featured in a photo flash article from Broadway World where his role as director-choreographer and her role as Abuela Claudia in the upcoming Axelrod Performing Arts Center (APAC) production of the Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes musical In The Heights were highlighted. Ileana Canal, with Kim Brantley, co-wrote, co-directed and co-produced the documentary Exiled From History-The Story of the U.S. Maroons. The documentary is being broadcast on DCTV all throughout March. For more information, including a schedule of airings, click here and here.
Caridad de la Luz (also known by her nom de poésie et de musique La Bruja), shown at right, will be teaching spoken word poetry in March and April as part of the sixth annual Hip Hop Academy, presented by Pepatián in association with BronxWorks. In addition, as part of the Academy, she was a panelist at the Entrepreneurship Panel and Career Lab which took place in March and April at BronxWorks (located in the Tremont area of the Bronx). The Héctor Luis Sin Censura blog (written and edited by Héctor Luis Rivera) announced the creation of LATA, the Latin Alternative Theater Awards. The awards will be handed out in 19 categories (with six special awards being presented out of competition), with the winners decided by popular vote. Among the HOLA members nominated for the LATA this year are Iván L. Argudo, Edmi De Jesús, Caridad del Valle, Berenice Di Piazza, Edna Lee Figueroa, Pablo García Gámez, Mario Golden, Vivienne Jurado, Billy Martin Mejía, Aileene Pérez, Angie Regina, Mafer Rodríguez, and Kathy Tejada; with A.B. Lugo, Yvette Quintero, Alfonso Rey, and Raúl Rivera garnering two nominations each. The award winners will be announced on Monday, March 27, 2017 at El Comisionado Dominicano de Cultura en EEUU (CoDoCul), located in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood.
