About the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA)
The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) is an arts service and advocacy organization dedicated to expanding the Hispanic artists in entertainment and media through the cultivation, education and recognition of emerging artists. Founded in 1975 by a group of Hispanic actors concerned with the images of Latinos in the media, HOLA now functions as a leading advocacy group in the industry for such actors working on stage, on television and in films. Most recently, HOLA made national headlines when it questioned the casting practices of a regional theater who was producing Stephen Adly Guirgis' play The Mother#@$%er With The Hat. Ultimately, HOLA strives for an accurate, informed and non-stereotyped portrayal of the full spectrum of Latino culture and heritage in all entertainment and media industries. She played opposite Halle Berry and Bruce Willis in Perfect Stranger and recently starred in Franc. Reyes’ The Ministers with Harvey Keitel and John Leguizamo. Some of her other film credits include Bittersweet Place, Deception, Transbeman and Veronika Decides to Die. In addition to her film and television work, she is also an accomplished stage actress and playwright. Her stage credits as an actress include Where’s My Money? (LAB, MTC), Dirty Story (LAB), Macbeth (Delacorte), Last Easter (MCC), Privilege (Second Stage) and Right You Are... (National Actors Theatre). She has worked at New York Theatre Workshop, 52nd Street Project, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and at the Eugene O’Neill Playwright’s Conference. Her second full-length play, girl in window, has been developed at LAByrinth, Rattlestick and New York Theater Workshop. In October 2009, Ms. Lozano wrote, directed and conceived a site-specific, guerrilla theater piece called Chez Moi in and around her old stomping grounds on East 25th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan. Vanessa Aspillaga, who played Daisy in underneathmybed, won a 2011 HOLA Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor. She will next act in the television pilot “Guilty” (starring Cuba Gooding, Jr.). SAG and AFTRA Members Vote to Merge

It seems that the third time was the charm.

After two failed attempts, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) members have approved a merger of the two unions, now to be called SAG-AFTRA. With a 57% return of the AFTRA membership and a 53% return of the SAG membership voting overwhelmingly in favor of merger (at 86% and 82%, respectively). Both unions needed at least 60% of each union to say yes. More than 55,000 SAG ballots and 37,500 AFTRA ballots were returned.

SAG-AFTRA national co-presidents Ken Howard and Roberta Reardon announced the results at 1:35pm Pacific time (4:35pm Eastern time), in a press conference that was live streamed. More than 6,000 viewers watched the announcement online.

SAG represented more than 125,000 actors who work in film and digital motion pictures and TV programs, commercials, video games, corporate/educational, Internet and all new-media formats. AFTRA represented more than 70,000 performers, journalists and other artists working in the entertainment and news media.

SAG/AFTRA Merger Vote Announcement to be Live Streamed

The results of the SAG/AFTRA merger vote will be announced Friday at 1pm Pacific Time/4pm Eastern Time and live streamed at this site. U.S. District Court judge James Otero Wednesday denied an injunction sought by opponents of SAG/AFTRA merger that would have preemptively voided the referendum now in process. The judge’s decision allows the vote tally to proceed. For more information, read the Jonathan Handel article in The Hollywood Reporter by clicking here.

Report: HOLA After The Curtain/HOLA Después Del Telón event on DC-7: THE ROBERTO CLEMENTE STORY

On Sunday, March 18, 2012, the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) hosted another installment of its HOLA After The Curtain/HOLA Después Del Telón series of post-performance discussions in conjunction with the Teatro SEA/Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre/The RMM Group production of the musical DC-7: The Roberto Clemente Story. The event, moderated by National Correspondent of NBCTelemundo's New York Bureau Isolda Peguero, was held immediately after the final public New York performance of the musical.

Participants included librettist-lyricist-composer-director Luis Caballero; musical director-composer Harold Gutiérrez; and cast members Modesto Lacén*, Lorraine Vélez, Manuel A. Morán* (also producer and lighting designer), Josean Ortiz*, Fidel Vicioso, Xiomara Rodríguez, Omar Pérez*, Johanna Rodríguez, Anthony Cotto and María Del Mar González.

Several revelations came to light during the discussion. Star Modesto Lacén expressed how he studied video footage of Pittsburgh Pirate Roberto Clemente and even modified his own hairline to better look like the famed baseball legend. In addition, Josean Ortiz noted that his family grew up in the same town as Clemente's family and that he personally knew Matino Clemente Walker (Roberto's brother), the role he was playing. Lorraine Vélez mentioned how she spends a lot of the show fighting back tears as she progresses through the show and how, above all, telling the story is what is most important. Manuel Morán also delighted the crowd in telling how a cast member originally didn't make the first cut only to book the role after accidentally showing up for the callback. After speaking to the company, moderator Peguero opened the floor up to the audience who lauded the performers and the writers for presenting such a rousing, moving performance. In addition, Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre founder and producer Miriam Colón-Valle addressed the company and the audience, thanking all for being there and helping make the show such a success. Afterwards, wine was served to those in attendance.

The production DC-7: The Roberto Clemente Story may have closed its off-Broadway run in New York, but it is planning to tour across the country, making stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Orlando, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; and Houston, Texas; among other stops. For more information about future presentations, click here.

Special thanks to all the participants, the staffs of Teatro SEA and the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, Javier Ethan Gómez*, Daniel D'Ambrosi, Haydée Díaz*, Johanna Ramírez* and HOLA volunteers Basil Rojas and Bobby Baker for helping make this event a successful one.
