Rosie Pérez, Adrienne Bailón, Bruno Mars, J.D. Pardo, Gabriela Natale, Others Nominated for 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards

Nominees for the 43th annual edition of the Daytime Emmy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), were announced on Thursday, March 24, 2016. The Daytime Emmy Awards recognizes outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2am to 6pm during the 2015 calendar year. The ceremony will take place on May 1, 2016 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites in Los Angeles, California. Creative Arts winners will be revealed during the Creative Arts Emmys on Friday, April 29, 2016 followed by the main ceremony on Sunday, May 1, 2016.

The Hulu program "East Los High" picked up a 2016 Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Daytime Digital Series, and one of its stars, J.D. Pardo, nabbed a nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Digital Daytime Drama Series.

All in all, CNN en Español received six nominations, Univision picked up four noms, while Telemundo picked up only one nod. Both of V-me TV's nominations were for "SuperLatina with Gaby Natale" (see below). Both of Hulu's two nominations were for the Latino-produced, Latino-written series "East Los High" (see above), Hulu's first and only series with an all-Latino cast.

Latinos nominated for 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards include Adrienne Bailón (nominated with Loni Love, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeannie Mai and Tamar Braxton for the syndicated program "The Real") and Rosie Pérez (nominated with Joy Behar, Candace Cameron Bure, Michelle Collins, Paula Faris, Whoopi Goldberg, Raven-Symoné, and Nicolle Wallace for the ABC's "The View"), both up for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host; and Bruno Mars (nominated with Mark Ronson), up for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Talk Show/Morning Program for his performance of "Uptown Funk" on the syndicated talk show "The Ellen Degeneres Show". The shows nominated for Outstanding Entertainment Program in Spanish include "Clix" (CNN en Español), "Destinos" (CNN en Español), "Fuerza en Movimiento" (CNN en Español), "SuperLatina with Gaby Natale" (V-me TV), and "Vive la salud con la Dra. Azaret" (CNN en Español). Nominated for Outstanding Morning Program in Spanish are the programs "Cafe CNN" (CNN en Español), "¡Despierta América!" (Univision),  and "Un Nuevo Día" (Telemundo). The nominees for Outstanding Daytime Talent in a Spanish Language Program are Raúl de Molina (co-host of Univision's "El Gordo y la Flaca") Carlos Calderón (correspondent of Univision's "El Gordo y la Flaca"), Elizabeth Hernández Curiel (correspondent of Univision's "El Gordo y la Flaca"), Camilo Egana (anchor of CNN en Español's "Encuentro"), and Gabriela Natale (host, V-me TV's "SuperLatina with Gaby Natale").

In addition, Carlos Alazraqui (Mr. Crocker in Nickelodeon's "The Fairly OddParents") and Eric Bauza (Puss in Boots and Sino in Netflix's "Puss in Boots") are nominated for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. Pati Jinich is nominated for Outstanding Culinary Host for the PBS program "Pati's Mexican Table" (which is also nominated, along with the PBS program "Mexico One Plate at a Time with Rick Bayless" for Outstanding Culinary Program). The syndicated program "The People's Court" (hosted by Marilyn Milián) received a nod for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program.

Edison Carrera is starring opposite Cecill Villar in the comedy Cama para tres. Adapted by Elías Balladares (from a play by J.C. Garccione) and directed and produced by Cecill Villar (for Compañía de Comedias Cecill Villar), the play also stars Ingrit Pérez, Piedad Castaño and Aksel Tang, and will open in April as part of the first annual Festival de Comedias TEBA, presented by the Teatro Experimental Blue Amigos at the Broadway Blackbox Theater in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood.

Edna Lee Figueroa was featured in the Entreactos y Telones column of the weekly New York newspaper La Voz Hispana, where her role as actress, co-director, and co-producer in the two-hander Santa Bárbara es una femme fatale was highlighted. Written by Mariana Monclova and Camila Monclova, the two-hander will be co-produced and co-directed by Figueroa and Edmi De Jesús (who also co-stars) for Producciones El Barrio, and will have its NYC premiere in April as part of the first annual Festival de Comedias TEBA, presented by the Teatro Experimental Blue Amigos at the Broadway Blackbox Theater in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood. The short film RED: The Masterpiece was released online today. The film (written by Sebastian Stimman and Pierre Taisne from a story by Stimman and directed by Taisne and Paul Bomba) stars Stimman, co-stars A.B. Lugo and features Enmanuel García Villavicencio and Inma Heredia, was produced for B10 Productions by Stimman, Taisne (who also edited and did the cinematography), and Marie-Gabrielle Duong (who also did the sound). Liliana Inés Barrera is the line producer and production designer of the New York production unit of the upcoming feature film Almas de furia. The film co-stars Lucio Fernández, Tony Rodríguez and Mônica Steuer, is co-produced by Rodríguez and is being co-directed by Pablo Yotich (Argentina unit) and Fernández (New York unit).

Anthony Ruiz is assistant directing the pilot "The Last Hand" (written by Paula Pizzi and Ed Trucco, and directed by Trucco). The pilot, which is currently shooting in New York City, stars Pizzi, Nelson Landrieu, Mariana Parma, Carolina Ravassa, Iván Camilo, and John J. Concado.

The II Semana Teatral de Miami en Off-Broadway festival, produced by Ángel Gil Orrios of Thalía Spanish Theatre and Yoshvani Medina of ArtSpoken Performing Arts Center, is being presented in March and April at Thalía's namesake theater located in the Sunnyside area of Queens. QEPD/RIP Osvaldo Pradere

On March 14, 2016, the Cuban-born theater artist Osvaldo Pradere, who spent many years living in Madrid, Spain, before relocating in New York City, passed away.

A loving person that went out of his way to help others, he was very universal in his thinking and joined a multitude of friends from many different cultures. He never hesitated to help family, friends or those in need of support. One of the most active founding members of the Cuban Cultural Center of New York, he was also founder and president of the Don Quijote Experimental Children’s Theater, later called the New York Children’s Theater.

All his life he used theater to educate children. He was a director, producer, puppeteer and playwright. He produced plays like Take Back Our Planet, written by Susana Tubert and Gloria Zelaya, that dealt with issues of the environment; The Golden Cacao Bean, written by Manuel Martín, about the cultures of Central America and the Mayas; Abe Lincoln and the Cook Kid, written by Ed Portnoy; and Columbus, written by Pradere, about the life of Christopher Columbus; among others.

He leaves behind his siblings Orestes, Mario, José and Bárbara Pradere; his nieces and nephews, some of whom include Mayra Pradere Grille, Richard Pradere and Stefanie Grille.

Kathy Tejada is starring in the Cristián Cortez Galecio play Maduritas, macrobióticas y multiorgásmicas. Directed by Franco Galecio and produced by Teatro Fragal, it will be presented in April as part of the first annual Festival de Comedias TEBA, presented by the Teatro Experimental Blue Amigos at the Broadway Blackbox Theater in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood.

Modesto Flako Jiménez has been extremely busy as of late. The actor and producer will appear as a panelist and perform at a panel called Expressive Practices, which is part of a day-long symposium entitled "Poverty & Sexuality". Organized by The Institute for Research on Women at Rutgers University, the symposium (whose keynote speaker will be Urvashi Vaid) will take place on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the First Floor Conference Room in the Ruth Dill Johnson Crockett Building at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In addition, his theater company, The Brooklyn Gypsies Collective is presenting the latest addition in its Ghetto Hors d'Oeuvres series (a series of poetic theatrical performances in which rappers and poets break down borders and collaboratively create an ode to Brooklyn’s gritty streets). [He received the role after the director saw him in the HOLA online directory of talent and asked him to audition.]

Alfonso Rey is designing the technical aspect of the production Así que pasen cinco años. Written by Federico García Lorca and directed by Paul Montoya, the production by La Caja de los Prejuicios/The Prejudice Box stars Caridad del Valle, Venuz Delmar, Christian López Lamelas, Samuel Garnica, Juan Villarreal (also see above), Sergio Freijo, and Miriam Pinedo, and will be presented in June as part of the VI Festival de Teatro Hispano del Comisionado, which will take place at the Teatro Rafael Villalona at the Comisionado Dominicano de Cultura en los EEUU, located in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood. Pablo Andrade and María Fontanals will be teaching the first ever Uta Hagen workshop taught in Spanish at world famous HB Studios (founded by Hagen's husband Herbert Berghof). The workshop, titled "Explorando monólogos con la técnica de Uta Hagen" ("Exploring Monologues with the Uta Hagen Method"), is a rigorous, four-day program taking place in July 2016. Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, shown at right, and the performance group known as Universes will be performing the world premiere of UniSon. With text consisting of the poetry of the award-winning playwright August Wilson, the musical (presented in association with Constanza Romero) will be directed by Robert O'Hara and also star Steven Sapp, Gamel Abdel Chasten and William "Ninja" Ruiz. The production will run from April through October at the Angus Bowmer Theatre at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. For more information, click here.
