Marco Antonio Rodríguez, shown at left, had the second part of his article, "One Foot Forward With A Potato Chip on My Shoulder," published in Latino Leaders magazine. The article chronicled his efforts in getting his HOLA Award-winning play La luz de un cigarrillo, produced in New York City (and later published). Arisleyda Lombert
, shown at right, received the Premio
Dominicano de Oro General Gregorio Luperón. The award is given to Dominican leaders in various areas for their work with the Dominican community in the United States. It was presented to her on September 29, 2012 at the Iglesia San Judas Tadeo in the Washington Heights/Inwood area of Manhattan. The Society of the Educational Arts (SEA) is taking its hit off-Broadway musical DC-7: The Roberto Clemente Story to Houston, Texas, U.S.A. With a libretto, music and lyrics by Luis Caballero (with additional music by Harold Gutiérrez and choreography by Luis Salgado), the musical is the winner of 14 awards (including two 2012 HOLA Awards) and stars Modesto Lacén (playing the Baseball Hall of Famer and humanitarian title character), Lorraine Vélez, Josean Ortiz and Manuel Morán and will have a November run at the Cullen Theater. Félix Solís can be seen playing Riv Brody in the new CBS television series "Made in Jersey," which premiered on September 28, 2012.

David Zayas can be seen playing Ángel Batista in the seventh season of Showtime's "Dexter" which will premiere on September 30, 2012. Both he and Félix Solís (see above) will be honorees at the 2012 HOLA Awards in October.

Julián Juaquín, shown at left, booked a short film (produced by UNARAZA Productionz [sic] and CoreTempArts) after he saw the casting notice in the daily e-mail announcements that HOLA sends to its members and self-submitting.

Nanda Abella will be in the film Whispers in the Dark. Presented by Jeff Wirth,
the film is an immersive fiction experience that plays out over 24 hours in settings throughout New York City. The experience culminates at the Film Society of Lincoln Center as part of the 50th annual New York Film Festival (NYFF), where highlights from the adventure will be screened on September 30, 2012 during a live presentation. For more information, click here. She will follow that up with the title role in an adaptation of the Euripides play Medea. Titled Divorcification, it is adapted and directed by Gary Ferrar and produced by the Hyper Aware Theater Company. Gilbert Cruz nabbed a role in an episode of "Blue Bloods" (CBS). 
 
Cedric Miró will be performing Beverly Bonner's A Night of Comedy and Variety on September 28, 2012 at the Broadway Comedy Club in the West Side of Manhattan. He will also appear in performing standup comedy on September 29, 2012 in The Sheba Mason Show at the New York Comedy Club in the Rose Hill section of Manhattan
 
Marco Antonio Rodríguez was interviewed by Rhina Valentín on the television series "Open" (BronxNet). Rodríguez spoke about his HOLA Award-winning play La luz de un cigarrillo, which was recently revived (with the original cast of Susanna Guzmán, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Arisleyda Lombert and Teresa Yenque) and is scheduled for another run in October at York College in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens. The show's recent revival was the subject of a feature article in Latin Trends magazine (click on the photo at right to read the article). Non-Latinos Buy Into Stereotypes About Hispanic Americans + Is Sofía Vergara's "Gloria" To Blame For Her Third Consecutive Emmy Loss?

"Large and surprising shares of non-Latino Americans embrace and fully believe a whole host of stereotypes that, in their minds, render the nation’s growing Latino population a community of universally hard-working, honest family-oriented immigrants who are largely living and working in the country illegally with their oversized families, limited education and the help of welfare, according to a study released Wednesday."

José Yenque, shown at left, received the Humanitarian Award from The Mexican Film Festival of the Americas at The Logan Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The short film Botes al amanecer (Cans at Dawn) won best short film. The film was written by Carlos Ibarra, directed by Nikki Roberts and executive produced by Yenque. It was previously a special selection at the 65th Festival de Cannes (Short Corner) and selected for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and New Filmmakers Los Angeles. September 24, 2012 (New York, New York) — The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA), the nation’s longest running active arts advocacy organization for Latino actors, is pleased to announce that it will honor film and television stars David Zayas (currently on Showtime’s “Dexter”), Marlene Forté (currently on TNT’s “Dallas”) and Félix Solís (a series regular of the upcoming CBS series “Made in Jersey” as Delta Airlines presents the 2012 HOLA Awards Gala and Benefit, sponsored in part by NBCUniversal and CBS. The Awards Gala and Benefit is an official event of NYC’s Latin Media and Entertainment Week (sponsored by the NYC Latin Media & Entertainment Commission created by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg) and will take place on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 6:30pm at The Battery Gardens, located on the waterfront in New York’s scenic Battery Park (opposite 17 State Street). Sponsorships slots are still available. A limited number of individual tickets are available at $150.

David Zayas, currently playing Ángel Batista on Showtime’s “Dexter” will receive the HOLA José Ferrer Tespis Award. Marlene Forté, currently playing Carmen Ramos on TNT’s “Dallas”; and Félix Solís, who plays Riv Brody in the upcoming CBS series “Made in Jersey”, will be honored with the organization’s inaugural HOLA Excellence in Television Award. Featured speakers at the 2012 HOLA Awards include SAG-AFTRA Co-President Roberta Reardon and SAG-AFTRA Co-Secretary-Treasurer Amy Aquino.


HOLA will present Excellence in Media Awards to NBC Latino and journalist/anchor José Díaz-Balart. NBC Latino is the new voice of American Hispanics -- elevating and leading the conversation around Latino news in the United States. Emmy Award winner Díaz-Balart is the current anchor of "Noticiero Telemundo." He made history by becoming the first U.S. journalist to broadcast both English and Spanish newscasts on two networks simultaneously (Telemundo and MSNBC).

HOLA will also present the inaugural Excellence in Reality Television Award to actor/filmmaker J.W. Cortés of the NBC reality competition series "Stars Earn Stripes." Marine and Gulf War veteran (and HOLA member) Cortés was one of the operatives of the popular series. Finally, HOLA will present a Special Recognition Award to the NYC Latin Media & Entertainment Commission (LMEC) for its commitment to furthering Latino arts and culture in New York City.

In addition to the aforementioned awards HOLA will also continue its annual tradition of honoring the best of Latino theater in New York with noncompetitive awards encompassing multiple winners in each category. HOLA is at the forefront in recognizing the high caliber work being offered across New York’s thriving Latino theatrical stages. A list of the 2011-2012 theater awardees is below.

Juan Villarreal, shown at right, nabbed a role in the Perfect World Pictures film Día de los muertos (directed by Maricela Reyes) after finding out about the project after receiving an e-mail announcement that HOLA sent to its members and self-submitting.

The Poets Den Theater and Raphael Benavides are presenting a remounting of the solo show Growing Up Gonzales. Written by Félix Rojas (recipient of the 2012 HOLA Award for Excellence in Playwriting), the play is directed by Cándido Tirado and will star Luis Antonio Ramos. The solo show will run in October and November at the Poets Den Theater, located in Manhattan's El Barrio neighborhood. For more information, click here.


Rodney Roldán, shown at left, booked a role in Michael Mejías' play Ghetto Babylon. The play won the 2012 National Latino Playwriting Award from the Arizona Theatre Company (ATC). As a result, the play will have a reading at the ATC in Tucson, Arizona and will thereafter have a further production sometime in 2013 in New York. Roldán was cast after the casting director saw his headshot on the HOLA online directory of talent and contacted him.

Iván Camilo, Ismael Cruz Córdova, A.B. Lugo and G. Terracino were chosen to be among the 25 Club Leaders of the Future by Latino Leaders magazine. The Latino leaders convened at the world famous 21 Club in Manhattan. For more information, click here.

Vanessa Verduga is set to premiere the first season of her webseries "Justice Woman" on October 4, 2012. The webseries is a comedy-drama series that follows the story of Sofía Escala, a spunky Assistant District Attorney, and who, as Justice Woman, whips crime into submission. Sociedad de Cine de Puerto Rico + Sundance Institute = Film Forward: Avanzando el Diálogo Cultural/Advancing Cultural Dialogue

The Puerto Rico Film Society/La Sociedad de Cine de Puerto Rico (SCPR) and the Sundance Institute (founded in 1981 by actor-director Robert Redford) is presenting “Film Forward: Avanzando el Diálogo Cultural/Advancing Cultural Dialogue.” Scheduled to be held between September 19 and September 22, 2012, the series of screenings and panels will be held all through the island.

HOLA Member Bochinche

Bochinche refers to "gossip." In this sense, we use it to mention HOLA members or Friends of HOLA who are getting acting and performance gigs. The names of HOLA members and Friends of HOLA are listed below in boldface.

Jennica Carmona, shown at left, booked a role in Mi Casa, Tu Casa (written by Michael Aquino, Deivis García, Jane Mandel and Dania Ramos and directed by Mandel) at Luna Stage (located in West Orange, New Jersey) after reading about the audition in the HOLA announcements that are sent to HOLA members and self-submitting. For more information, click here. In addition, she is working with her sister Jessica Carmona on a film titled Millie and the Lords. A trailer for the film was screened in September at the Rochester Latino Film Festival in Rochester, New York.

Tony Plana will star in Pain and Gain
. Directed by Michael Bay, the film also stars Rebel Wilson, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Harris, Ken Jeong, Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub and Rob Corddry. The film is scheduled for a national spring 2013 release.

The film Under My Nails (written by Kisha Tikina Burgos, directed by Ari Maniel Cruz) will be screened in September at the San Francisco Latino Film Festival. The film will play at the Opera house Cinemas on September 16, 2012 and at Artists' Television Access on September 21, 2012, respectively, in San Francisco California. The film stars Iván Camilo, Burgos, Maité Bonilla, Rosie Berrido, Marilú Acosta, Dolores Pedro, Enrique Juliá, Miranda Purcell and Antonio Pantojas in the cast. For more information, click here.

Alex Celeste Muñiz is set to act in the world premiere of the play Broken Heart Story. Written by Finnish playwright Saara Turunen, the Ingenue Theater production is directed by Tracy Cameron Francis and also features Rebecca Martínez, Adam Boncz, Isobel Bruce and Mary Notari in the cast. With music by Ryan Anthony Francis, the multimedia dance-theater work is scheduled for a September and October run at The Center for Performance Research, located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Ángela Cove, shown at right, booked a role in the play Bad Uncle. Written and directed by Rob Torres (with co-direction by Enlightment), the play will have a November run in Norman Thomas High School located in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighborhood. She found out about the play after she read about the casting notice in the daily e-mail announcements HOLA sends to its members and self-submitted.

Elaine Del Valle
is presenting her self-penned solo show Brownsville Bred (directed by Pamela Moller Kareman) across colleges and universities. Its latest stop is Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York where she will present the show in September. For more information, click here.

Gustavo Pace is presenting his self-penned solo show Naked Brazilian (directed by Lou Liberatore) as part of the United Solo Festival. The show will perform on Friday, October 12, 2012. Also performing at the United Solo Festival is José Roldán, Jr., who will present his self-penned solo show Father Forgive Me For I Have Sinned (directed by Dante Albertie) on Wednesday, October 24, 2012. For more information on this show, click here. Both shows will take place at the Theater Row Studio Theater in the theater district of midtown Manhattan.

Teresa Yenque is treading the boards in the play Luz. Written by Catherine Filloux and directed by José Zayas (with music by Sergio R. Reyes), the play also stars Kim Brockington, Peter Jay Fernández, Lynnette R. Freeman, Bobby Plasencia, Kimber Riddle, Julissa Román and Mark Zeisler. It is presented by Watson Arts Project and will premiere at the First Floor Theater at La Mama, located in Manhattan's East Village. For more information, click here.

The film Elliot Loves (helmed by G. Terracino) will be screened at the Out in Africa: South Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The film will be screened on October 21 and 28, 2012 at either the Nu Metro Cinema JHB Hyde Park or the Nu Metro Cinema Cape Town V&A (depending on the date), both in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. Elliot Loves was produced by Terracino and Elizabeth Gardner and co-produced by Juan Cáceres, stars Robin De Jesús, Elaine Del Valle (see above), Alfredo Narciso, Cedric Leiba, George Ruiz, Dalia Davi, Monte Bezell, Judy Torres, Bobby DeJesús, Denia Brache and Fabio Costaprado in the cast. The film's screenwriter-director, Terracino, also won the Best Screenplay Award at the Long Beach Q Film Festival, where it recently played. Adel Morales is currently in post-production for his webseries "Pushing Dreams." The webseries, which he wrote and directed, stars Flaco Navaja, Caridad de la Luz (see below), Selenis Leyva, Luis Antonio Ramos, Víctor Cruz, Plinio Villablanca, Iliana Guibert, Ángela Cove (see above), Kareem Saviñón, Lisann Valentín, Jaime Santana, Liza Galletti, Loren Escandón, Bobby DeJesús (see above), Chandra Thomas, Gabriel Sloyer, Dominic Colón, Mónica Walter, Dennis Brito and Allen Holloway. Caridad de la Luz (also known by her nom de poésie et de musique La Bruja) appeared on the radio show "Artsy Fartsy" (hosted by Barika Edwards on WBAI Pacifica Radio) on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, where she recited her poem, "WTC." August 13, 2012 (New York, New York) — The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA), the nation’s longest running active arts advocacy organization for Latino actors, is pleased to announce that it will honor film and television stars David Zayas (currently on Showtime’s “Dexter”), Marlene Forté (currently on TNT’s “Dallas”) and Félix Solís (a series regular of the upcoming CBS series “Made in Jersey” as Delta Airlines presents the 2012 HOLA Awards Gala and Benefit, sponsored in part by CBS. The Awards Gala and Benefit is an official event of NYC’s Latin Media and Entertainment Week (sponsored by the NYC Latin Media & Entertainment Commission created by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg) and will take place on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 6:30pm at The Battery Gardens, located on the waterfront in New York’s scenic Battery Park (opposite 17 State Street). Sponsorships slots are still available. A limited number of individual tickets are available at $150.

David Zayas, currently playing Ángel Batista on Showtime’s “Dexter” will receive the HOLA José Ferrer Tespis Award. Marlene Forté, currently playing Carmen Ramos on TNT’s “Dallas”; and Félix Solís, who plays Riv Brody in the upcoming CBS series “Made in Jersey”, will be honored with the organization’s inaugural HOLA Excellence in Television Award. Featured speakers at the 2012 HOLA Awards include SAG-AFTRA Co-President Roberta Reardon and SAG-AFTRA Co-Secretary-Treasurer Amy Aquino.

HOLA will present Excellence in Media Awards to NBC Latino and journalist/anchor José Díaz-Balart. NBC Latino is the new voice of American Hispanics -- elevating and leading the conversation around Latino news in the United States. Emmy Award winner Díaz-Balart is the current anchor of "Noticiero Telemundo." He made history by becoming the first U.S. journalist to broadcast both English and Spanish newscasts on two networks simultaneously (Telemundo and MSNBC).

In addition to the aforementioned awards HOLA will also continue its annual tradition of honoring the best of Latino theater in New York with noncompetitive awards encompassing multiple winners in each category. HOLA is at the forefront in recognizing the high caliber work being offered across New York’s thriving Latino theatrical stages. A list of the 2011-2012 theater awardees is below.
